What are the functional needs in designing a home?
A house should accommodate all essential physical requirements of space. It must meet financial constraints. It must provide safety and security. It must follow for flexibility when the lifestyle of the family changes like births, growth of children and so on. Design must take into account the ages of family members. The majority of the people who spend their time on home are young children, mothers of young children and the elderly. Special care is a must for these age groups.
How to design a home where the above said group lives?
- A guest room can be designed in ground floor so that elder groups need not use a stair.
- Use of single step can be avoided as they may cause a slip.
- A pooja room on the ground floor is a good idea too.
- Space requirement is calculated as the children grow.
A house must provide for the changing lifestyle. Earlier where a rural family system existed the main task was only survival and the house was for shelter. In the urban nuclear family today there is more time for leisure. The home binds the family members today. Recreation activities like T.V. family rooms bind the family together. The functional needs have to fit with the size, ages, sex, and level of income and cultural values of the family. This is valid for all sizes of plots.
